(AP) —the Oakland Raiders practice field in his familiar No. 84 jersey surrounded by cameras and received warm greetings from teammates.His weeklong absence to deal with his frostbitten feet and a grievance with the NFL over the use of a helmet has ended and now he’s eager to get back on the field as soon as he can.“I’m extremely grateful to be here,” Brown said during a short news conference Tuesday. “I’ve been dealing with a lot of adversity. I’m excited to be back and see my teammates and get in the groove of things.”Brown has not participated in a full practice for the Raiders after starting training camp on the non-football injury list with injuries to his feet that reportedly came from frostbite suffered while getting cryotherapy treatment in France. Agent Drew Rosenhaus called the injuries on Brown’s feet “brutal” and Brown left camp last week to meet with a specialist.Brown gave no timeline for when he would be healthy enough to practice, saying only to “stay tuned.”Coach Jon Gruden said he didn’t know whether Brown would play in an exhibition game but was confident he’d be healthy enough for the season opener Sept. 9 against Denver.“I feel a lot better working toward 100%,” Brown said. “It’s been a process with the feet. Any time you have a lot of blisters, it’s hard to change direction and run and do what I do naturally. I’ve been away getting a lot of work. I’m excited just to move forward.”Brown also has been battling with the NFL over his helmet, losing a grievance on Monday to use a version of his helmet that is no longer certified for practice or play.The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment sets performance and test standards for equipment. Brown’s Schutt Air Advantage helmet is no longer allowed because the NFL follows the National Athletic Equipment Reconditioners Association (NAERA) rule that helmets 10 years old or older cannot be recertified.Schutt has discontinued making the helmet because current technology had moved past it, according to the company.Brown sent out a Tweet offering a signed Raiders helmet for a newer version of Brown’s preferred helmet. Rosenhaus said they have found a newer version and are now waiting for it to be certified.“Hopefully we’re going to get this behind us soon,” Rosenhaus said.Brown has been the game’s most prolific receiver the past six years but the Raiders were able to acquire him from Pittsburgh for just a third- and fifth-round pick in March because of problems off the field and with the organization.But the Raiders are counting on him being a major part of their team this season as they try to bounce back from a 4-12 campaign in Gruden’s first season back on the sideline in Oakland.Quarterback Derek Carr said Brown’s return brought extra life to the team and he believes the extensive time they spent together working in the offseason will help them get back up to speed quickly.“We’ll be ready to go Week 1. We have a lot of time until then,” Carr said. “We have so much time to get some game-plan plays down, some routes, certain cuts we’ll have him run. We’ll have plenty of time. (AP) — Nathan Peterman ran farther on one play in his first preseason game with the Oakland Raiders than he ever did with the Buffalo Bills.If it helps Peterman gain an edge in the battle to be Derek Carr’s backup, he’s more than happy to keep doing it.Peterman scrambled 50 yards to set up his only touchdown throw and the Raiders beat the Los Angeles Rams 14-3 in the preseason opener for both teams Saturday night.Article continues below ...“He can run,” Oakland coach Jon Gruden said. “As he continues to gain command of the offense he’s going to be an interesting guy to watch.”Peterman entered in the third quarter and completed 9 of 12 passes for 66 yards. Glennon, attempting to latch on with his fourth team in four years, started and went 17 of 25 for 200 yards, but threw two interceptions.Peterman’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Keelan Doss on an inside slant came two plays after Peterman was forced out of the pocket on a third-and-4 play from the Oakland 42 and weaved his way through the defense to the 8. The throw to Doss was confirmed after a review.“It was a super clean pocket and I was able to get out to my left.” Peterman said. “Took off and I was about to slide then noticed that there was nobody else there. I think it was because of guys blocking downfield, guys making big plays for me. Tried to get in there, didn’t quite make it.”Both teams held out of a majority of their starters after holding two joint practices at the Raiders’ training camp facilities in Napa.Blake Bortles started for the Rams and played one series in place of Jared Goff. Bortles completed 3 of 8 throws for 50 yards and had a 59.4 rating.“He’s shown that he can be a big-time quarterback and he’s really picked up things nicely,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “He is really unfazed by anything that doesn’t go our way. The third-rounder was dropped for a pair of big losses early and managed 13 yards on six carries.MISSING PASS RUSHThe Raiders spent much of the offseason attempting to improve a pass rush that was last in the NFL in sacks a year ago. They clearly still have a long ways to go, although defensive end Arden Key had a good night with a sack and two hurries.IT’S BEEN A WHILELos Angeles cornerback Kevin Peterson missed all of 2018 with a torn ACL he suffered in the Rams first preseason game last year. Peterson showed some rust early when he leveled punt returner De’Mornay Pierson-El and was flagged 15 yards for fair catch interference. Peterson made up for his gaffe later with an interception near midfield and a 19-yard return.WILSON KEEPS IMPRESSINGWhile Brown remains missing, Oakland wide receiver J.J. Nelson has been turning heads since the start of camp with several impressive catches on deep throws. Nelson continued that trend with a leaping, turning 38-yard catch from Glennon followed by a short 5-yard reception that helped set up the Raiders’ first score.ABOUT THAT ONE PLAYRams rookie left tackle David Edwards had his hands full going against Raiders’ first-rounder Clelin Ferrell in the first half. Edwards held his own for the first part, limited Ferrell to one tackle. But the fifth-round draft pick was called for a false start when the Rams attempted a kneel-down play before halftime.INJURIESRaiders second-round pick Isaiah Johnson left the game with a concussion in the first quarter after getting hit in the head by teammate Marquel Lee’s knee. The rookie cornerback appeared woozy and had to be helped off the field before going to the locker room. Oakland got another scare in the second quarter when backup right guard Denver Kirkland limped off the field.
