The case is crafted from proprietary white ceramic, glass, and carbon fiber, combining durability with a cosmically inspired aesthetic.
Independent watchmaker URWERK has launched the UR-100V "LightSpeed" ceramic watch, a limited-edition timepiece that redefines horological measurement by tracing the propagation of light through space.
Concepted by co-founders Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, this watch redefines horology as a cosmic interface, translating the propagation of light through the solar system into a mechanical display. This timepiece features the brand's signature "Wandering Hour" satellite, tracking the journey of photons from the Sun to the eight planets of the solar system. In addition to displaying hours and minutes, the 3D planetary display highlights precise scientific data, such as the 8.3-minute journey of sunlight to Earth and the 4.1-hour journey to Neptune.
The watch case represents URWERK's latest exploration in composite materials engineering. It is crafted from URWERK's exclusive white ceramic, reinforced with glass and carbon fibers, combining the visual precision of ceramic with superior shock resistance. URWERK's proprietary polymer matrix is designed to overcome the brittleness of traditional sintered ceramics, fusing finely woven ceramic, glass, and carbon fibers to enhance shock resistance. This layered structure shifts between a deep matte finish and a soft luminescence depending on the light, complementing the black dial, whose design is inspired by "windows to the deep universe." The Grade 5 titanium case back, treated with micro-blasting and DLC, clearly reveals the automatic winding rotor that powers the movement, its abstract shape resembling a symbol of the sun. At the heart of this timepiece is the UR 12.02 automatic movement, controlled by URWERK's signature Windfänger air-resistance turbine system for enhanced winding efficiency. This movement vibrates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, boasts a 48-hour power reserve, and is housed in a three-layered baseplate made of ARCAP alloy for optimal stability. The UR-100V LS Ceramic watch comes with a black or white textured rubber strap.
